A sketchbook. Not an earth shattering idea, right?
There are tons of them out there. But not one that I wanted. I was using a freebie promo sketchbook manufactured by a stock photo company that I had picked up at a design conference. Worse yet, I was down to the last few pages of it. I had grown accustomed to its shape and could not for the life of me find another one online.
Halfway through my pint of home brew, the idea struck.
Just make my on sketchbook! I presented the idea to a few close friends who usually tell me my ideas are crazy. Not this time. This time they said things like, “I’d use that” and ”Why is this not already a thing?” So I got about the business of turning this sketchbook idea of mine into a reality. I then contacted a few folks who had the skills necessary to lend a hand to get this idea off the ground.
Whenever you start something, there will be haters and most of them live in yer head. Luckily for me I don’t hear so well. The further I pushed to make a sketchbook I liked, the more excited I got.
You see, this sketchbook I manufactured to serve my needs is NOT the best sketchbook. The BEST sketchbook is any sketchbook that you’ll actually use. It’s the one that you don’t feel intimidated to fill with your crazy ideas. If you’re brave enough open yourself up to those crazy ideas, they just might take you somewhere you actually wanna go. My hope for you is that you’ll choose this sketchbook to take you there.
Yes, the last name is Native American. I’m a Cherokee. I read about one non-fiction book per month. I love legos…way too much for a man of my age. Batman. Every time and always. Almost all food benefits when paired with bacon. I said almost. Movie popcorn, life’s too short for anything less. I swim for exercise…because of the bacon and movie popcorn. I own an Indiana Jones hat. Yes, I look stupid wearing it. I use fun, clever ideas to make tangible design solutions that actually work. That way, you can feel confident about doing business instead of worrying how you look. I started Walkingstick Design, so that you don’t have to stress about branding your business. Now you can experience professional design results, while focusing on serving your customers well.
How does this sketchbook benefit you?
Pocket: I needed a single place to keep all my ideas. Everything from post it notes to scraps of paper held valuable logo ideas, shirt ideas, poster ideas (you get the picture). To make things worse, I was on my last few pages of my sketchbook. I looked everywhere online and came up empty. So I decided to hustle and manufacture my own sketchbook about 6 months ago. I’m excited to tell you guys that this little idea is finally coming together. What’s in YOUR pocket?
Size: I don’t care for small, overly designed, tightly bound little sketchbooks that make you feel like your doodles have to be perfect or they can’t live there. I needed more space to make mistakes. I’ve found that most sketchbooks I come across are just too darn small. Yet some were just too big and bulky. The Best Sketchbook gives me the freedom I want. It’s just the right size.
Flat: I used to use some really nice popular little sketchbooks that would frustrate me to no end because they would not lay flat in my scanner. So when I manufactured my own sketchbook, I decided to make it double spiral bound allowing it to fold completely flat, thus ensuring I could get full use outta each precious sketchbook page!
Pencil: So you sit down to focus. You’ve got yer fresh cup of coffee, headphones on, the best sketchbook open to a nice blank page and your favorite…crap, where’s my favorite pen!? Friends, never let this happen to you again. When I set out to design a sketchbook that meets my specifications, it had to have a nice wide spiral bind. Why? To hold that most cherished pen or pencil you use to make greatness happen. Just another reason why this sketchbook is the one for you.
Eco: One man’s trash is another man’s cash. See what I did there? Here’s my thinking. Why cut down a tree when there’s plenty of stuff to make a good, solid, hard working sketchbook? I couldn’t find a good reason either. It was important to me when manufacturing the best sketchbook that it be made of stuff we already had, from stuff people threw out. The ideas I put in this thing will end up supporting my wife and kids, my friends, and my clients organizations. If you had the ability to turn real trash into real treasure, would you? My answer is YES, I wood!
OK/USA: Whilst trolling down the isles of “America’s Favorite Craft Store” I felt myself become a bit disheartened. At the bottom of each cover of each sketchbook were printed the words “Made in China.” Now, I have nothing against the hard working people of China. I did wonder however, if you had the ability to make sure every dime of the manufacturing process stayed in the US of A, would you? My answer is YES, I would. That’s why the materials and manufacturing of this sketchbook are is proudly made right here in the United States of America. Sure it may cost a few bucks more to make, but your dollars are keeping American small business owners, just like me, alive and kicking. So thank you!
